I am inspired by so many things. Sometimes it’s something my kids say, a scene from a movie, a song lyric, or simply just a colour, or opening my cupboards. Sometimes it’s hard to turn off.
Once I have a concept running through my head, I start my digital creations in Adobe Photoshop. I draw out my main shape, or object, then echo out the lines. Once I am happy with the echo, I source imagery to reflect my concept. From subject, to pattern, to colour, I grab as many images as I can to help convey my idea. Most of the time I have to alter each image. They are never quite exactly what I wanted, but with over 20 years experience working with Photoshop, I can fixed them up they way I want fairly quickly. Once I get my revised images all into the same file as my echo lines, then the fun begins. I am constantly sorting out their order, adjusting their colours, densities and sizes until I’m mostly happy. Then I wait for my biggest critics, my kids, to tell me what else needs to be done. They are pretty good at fine tuning my work. I appreciate all their input. Once the whole family has approved the design, it’s ready to print!
“There are really three parts to the creative process. First there is the inspiration, then there is the execution, and finally there is the release.”
